I’m Howard Martin and I’m the owner and guide here at Howie's Hikes (or more officially know as Norfolk Island Hikes). I’m a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian and fortunate to have grown up here on Norfolk. Our family ran a guest lodge for many years adjacent to the Norfolk Island National Park and we regularly treated our guests to bush walks into the park. We’re very proud ambassadors of Norfolk’s traditions and culture , especially our values, language, flora and fauna and of course, food.
After spending time away in the corporate world I returned home to Norfolk in 2018 with my family. I’d developed a strong interest in hiking and I was keen to one day launch my own hiking venture on the island. At the same time I was also noticing that the cherished Norfolk values and traditions I’d lovingly and respectfully grown up with were rapidly fading into history. I felt compelled to simply do my part to hopefully give them new life - in other words reinvigorate “awus waey - ah Norf’k waey” ( our way - the Norfolk Way).
En huttae! Howie's Hikes hatched in October 2024 - it provides the perfect opportunity for me to combine my passion for hiking, Norfolk’s native flora and fauna and the enjoyment I get from interacting with our island visitors and proudly sharing Norfolks unique culture and values.
